In his younger years he loved softball and played on many teams, his all-time favorite was The Downeasters. He also dug worms and clams. He was known as the “Wrinkle King” of Washington County, and enjoyed lobster fishing in recent years. In his later years he was an avid golfer and loved the competitions he had with his golfing buddies, Barney Smith, Brad Taylor, Tony French, Ralph Davis, John Grant, and many others. He thoroughly enjoyed "betting the horses" at the OTB in Bangor. He loved the Red Sox and took joy in aggravating Yankees fans. Shirley was a great instigator, he would wind people up and then wonder what “all the fuss was about?” He loved telling stories and getting people wound up.
